It all boils down to one very simple question. It’s a question, that if you answer it in one way will give you a path to accomplishing what you want. If you answer it in another way you could very well be left muddling through life. And the question is:

What do you want?

When I ask people that question I get one of two answers. Some people answer it by saying I want more money, I want to be happy, I want to travel. When I hear these answers I know the person may not be on the path they want to be on. Now ask that question of me.

“Okay Evan, what do you want?”

I want to see my 7000th species of bird on my 70th birthday. Hence the name of this website, 7000 to 70. But I’m getting ahead of myself. See the difference between the typical answers and my answer. My answer is very specific. You can visualize see 7000 species of birds. (If you’re not a birder maybe not so much but you see the picture.)

Why is a specific answer to the very simple question what do you want so important? I can think of two reasons.

First, if you know specifically what you want you can tell people just exactly that. This is particularly important for the people who love you. They love you and they want the best for you and they will do whatever it takes to help you get there. If you tell them, in a very concrete way, what you want they may be able to open doors for you or make suggestions on how you can get what you want.

Second, if you know specifically what you want you will see opportunities that you never saw before. Doors will open for you to get to what you want because you know what you want.

This website is about my quest to get to 7,000 species of birds by my 70th birthday. When I share that goal with other birders some think I’m crazy, (they’re right). But more often than not they have great suggestions on how I can get to my goal. I will share stories about my quest to get to 7,000 species but I will also share stories about how the stories came to be. All about that what do you want question.
